The potato chip was invented in Saratoga Lake, NY. Its inventor was George Speck—the son of an African American father and Native American mother. Later he professionally adopted the last name Crum. He was a gifted, although surly, cook working as the chef of the Moon Lake Lodge Resort in 1853. Some food experts believe the chip and dip duo began its rise to popularity in the 1950s when Lipton began advertising a recipe that encouraged people to combine its dehydrated onion soup mix with cream cheese or sour cream and serve it with potato chips.
Choices of chips can be tortilla chips, potato chips, or pretzels. It takes 10,000 pounds of potatoes to make 3,500 pounds of potato chips.
