The Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine was established by the Decree of the President of Ukraine on October 14, 2004 on the basis of the Department of Intelligence and the intelligence units of the regional bodies of the Security Service of Ukraine. On December 1, 2005 the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Law "On the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine". Subsequently, it was decided to celebrate this day as a professional holiday of Ukrainian intelligence officers.
On November 22, 2018, taking into account the significant contribution of Ukrainian intelligence officers in the protection of Ukraine's national interests from external threats, as well as the life and health of its citizens and state property outside Ukraine, the strengthening of state defense capabilities, in order to revive the national intelligence identity and start modern traditions of honoring the victories of Ukrainian foreign intelligence, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed Decree No. 381/2018 to approve the date of January 24 as Foreign Intelligence Day of Ukraine
