Since the dawn of Brazil, its history has been intertwined with the sea. Through the maritime spaces came the Portuguese colonizers and many other people who helped compose national identity. The history of the consolidation of independence and the defense of current borders were also written by the sea and inland waters. These waters, in which we have always been victorious, were equally marked by the sacrifice of compatriots, who offered their lives for the benefit of Brazil.
With this vision, brazilians pay a just tribute on December 13, the date of birth of Admiral Joaquim Marques Lisboa, to the history of one of the great National Heroes, the Patron of the Brazilian Navy, who dedicated, with full devotion, 66 years of service to the Homeland.
Besides the War of Independence, where he was embarked on board the Frigate Niterói, participating in the pursuit of the Portuguese fleet leaving Bahia, he stood out in the Cisplatine War where he received his first ship command at the age of 18, and later became a hero, participating in several important episodes of this war. During the Regency period, he took an active part in pacifying several insurrections. He lived, therefore, in a very important period of the consolidation of the national state.
