The National Sovereignty Day is celebrated on November 20, in commemoration of the battle of Vuelta de Obligado in 1845. At that time, the heroic Argentine soldiers, in inferior conditions, resisted the invasion of the Anglo-French army, which intended to colonize the territories of country.
The event served to ratify and guarantee the national sovereignty, implied the signing of a peace treaty between Argentina, France and Great Britain, and was engraved in history as a symbol of independence, freedom and national unity.
It is a 'transferable holiday'. According to the Law for the Establishment of Holidays and Long Weekends, those special dates that coincide with Tuesdays and Wednesdays will be moved to the previous Monday. This explains why the holiday is celebrated two days before the corresponding date.
