Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BH; Department of State: Division of Corporations, File Number: 2908471, Incorporation Date / Formation Date: 6/16/1998) is an American multinational conglomerate holding company headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, United States. Number of employees: 372,000 (2021). BH has the most expensive stock in US investing history.
Berkshire Hathaway traces its roots to a textile manufacturing company established by Oliver Chace in 1839 as the Valley Falls Company in Valley Falls, Rhode Island. Chace had previously worked for Samuel Slater, the founder of the first successful textile mill in America. Chace founded his first textile mill in 1806. In 1929, the Valley Falls Company merged with the Berkshire Cotton Manufacturing Company established in 1889, in Adams, Massachusetts. The combined company was known as Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates. BH was originally a failing textile manufacturer when Buffet first took control.
Until only recently, BH had been distantly outperforming the S&P 500 for years. In fact, in the time since Buffet took over the company, it has only under-performed the S&P once for five years from 2008 to 2013.
