He was born February 22, 1732. George Washington is honored for his efforts to create a new nation dedicated to the rights of the people. He only had about 8 years of formal schooling and was largely self-taught in various disciplines. He was so good at mathematics, that he became a paid surveyor at age 16. He was commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. In 1789, he was inaugurated as the first president of the United States. Washington is the only president to have been unanimously elected by the Electoral College. He added "So help me God" on to the Presidential Oath of Office at his inauguration and its been done that way ever since and greeting the President as "Mr. President" was his idea.
February 22 in Wisconsin Public School is observed George Washington’s Birthday. Originally part of court statutes to observe these days and was enacted for the schools on June 27, 1923, from the 1923 Laws of Wisconsin, Chapter 307, section 20.
Interesting facts about George Washington: Washington is the only President who never ran for President! Days of thanksgiving were celebrated since the beginning of European settlement in North America. In 1789, President Washington formalized the holiday by issuing a proclamation designating November 26 as a national day of thanksgiving. Washington declared that the day sprung from the Almighty’s care of Americans both during and after the Revolution. On May 31, 1790, President Washington signed the first Copyright Act. He presided over the convention that drafted the current United States Constitution and during his lifetime was called the "father of his country".
