The Kyrgyz language or Kirghiz (êûðãûç òèëè) is a Turkic language, and along with Russian is the official language of Kyrgyzstan, traditional to the Kyrgyz ethnic group.
It is spoken by 3 million people in Kyrgyzstan, China, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkey and Russia. It uses scripts modified from the Cyrillic (in Kyrgyzstan) and Arabic alphabets (in China). Between 1928 and 1940, the Latin alphabet was used. Today, Russian remains the main language in large cities, such as Bishkek, while Kyrgyz continues to lose ground, especially among the younger generation.
