Slovakia September 9 has been set as the Day of the Victims of the Holocaust and Racial Violence. The date commemorates the introduction of the Jewish Code in 1941. The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia March 12 has been set as Holocaust Remembrance Day.
On October 31, 2001, the Slovak National Assembly declared September 9 as the day on which we remember the victims of the Holocaust and on which we call for the struggle against all manifestations of racism, xenophobia, intolerance and any form of repression or discrimination.
Josef Tiso, who served as President of the Slovak Government from 1939 to 1945, promoted the deportation of tens of thousands of Jews to Nazi extermination camps.
