The Constitutionalist Revolution (Revolução Constitucionalista), begun on July 9, 1932, led by the state of São Paulo, defended a new constitution for Brazil and was turned against the authoritarianism of the Provisional Government of Getúlio Vargas. For nearly four months the Paulists fought troops loyal to Vargas and, isolated, were defeated. The uprising was not in vain, for in 1934 the new Brazilian Constitution was promulgated.
São Paulo now has 18 million people and is the third largest city in the world. The city has more cars than people in Rio de Janeiro.
Interestingly, it is a fact that in 1958 the rhinoceros was one of the candidates in the elections for the São Paulo City Council.
