The Constituent Assembly drafted the Constitution, and on March 3, 1952, it was submitted to the people of Puerto Rico for its acceptance or rejection: 374,649 voted in favor and 82,923 against.
On July 25, 1952, the validity of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is proclaimed, in a ceremony presided over by its creator, Mr. Luis Muñoz Marín.
Puerto Rico Constitution Day (Puerto Rico Commonwealth Constitution Day) is celebrated on July 25 each year and has been a public holiday in Puerto Rico since the adoption of its current constitution in 1952. Constitution Day is a celebration of a new status and relationship between the United States and Puerto Rico. Specifically, Puerto Rico went from being a "colony" to being a "free associated state." On July 3, 1952, the new constitution was approved by 82% of Puerto Ricans in a referendum.
