This date was officially established through Government Agreement 352-2006. Taking this as a reference, and through article 183, literal e, of the Political Constitution of the Republic of Guatemala, this date was instituted so that the members of the national teaching profession could obtain a paid leave of absence.
The commemoration was born as a tribute to the teacher María Chinchilla, who became a symbol of the struggle when the population rose up against the dictatorship of Jorge Ubico in 1944. This day arose as a tribute to Guatemalan teachers, professors or professors.
The national teaching profession provides services in the education of children and youth, being its decisive social contribution to achieve the common good and the integral development of the human person.
