Mabo Day in Australia
Mabo Day in Australia is held on June 3. It commemorates Eddie Koiki Mabo [c. 29 June 1936–21 January 1992] a Torres Strait Islander whose campaign for Indigenous land rights led to a landmark decision of the High Court of Australia that, on 3 June 1992, overturned the legal fiction of terra nullius which had characterised Australian law with regards to land and title since the voyage of James Cook in 1770. This event in the first decade of the month June is annual.

Born on 29 June 1936 in his village of Las on the island of Mer in the Torres Strait, Eddie Koiki Mabo was the fourth child of Robert Zesou Sambo and Poipe (Sambo) Mabo. He was taught from a young age about the importance of respecting other people’s land. While most of his adult life was spent on mainland Australia, Koiki’s cultural identity remained deeply rooted in Malo law and Meriam custom.
Mabo was awarded the Australian Human Rights Medal in 1992 in recognition of his participation in gaining justice for the rights of indigenous people. He was also voted 1992 Australian of the Year by The Australian newspaper. In 2008 James Cook University named it Townsville campus library the Eddie Koiki Mabo Library.
