The Weimar Onion Market is a traditional event that takes place in Weimar every year on the second weekend in October. The onion market is considered Thuringia's largest folk festival. The onion market is officially opened with the traditional barrel tapping on Friday evening.
Origin: The onion market has a long tradition dating back to 1653. Originally known as the "Viehe- und Zippelmarkt", the colorful autumn hustle and bustle in Weimar has developed into this large festival over the course of time.
Program: There is an entertainment program at various locations, and for young guests there is a varied hands-on offer and stage program. Live bands provide entertainment on several stages.
Parade: On Saturday afternoon, a magnificent parade with decorated floats and bands parades through the city center.
City run: The city run for the Onion Market is very popular, with 2000 runners taking part over a distance of 11 kilometers.
Onion market queen: Young women from Weimar, the surrounding area or Heldrungen can compete for the onion crown.
Colorful market: Hundreds of stalls offer a variety of goods, including onions in all shapes and colors, of course, but also arts and crafts, regional specialties and culinary delights.
