The Säubrennerkirmes in Wittlich is a popular folk and street festival that takes place every year on the third weekend in August. The focus is on roasting more than a hundred sows on a spit. The mayor traditionally opens the fair with a siege drink on the market square, directly in front of the Ferris wheel. There is also a spectacle for the Säubrenner saga in the city park. A great opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere and experience free rides on the rides!
The Säubrennersage is a legend associated with the Säubrennerkirmes in Wittlich. It tells of a butcher who stole a pig during a famine and secretly slaughtered it to feed his family. When he sold the meat, he was betrayed by the other butchers and put on trial. But the meat turned to ashes and the butcher was acquitted. Since then, a pig has been roasted on a spit every year at the fair to commemorate this legend.
