The Sommerlibori in Paderborn is a nine-day festival that offers a unique mix of church, funfair and culture. It attracts around 1.5 million visitors every year. The date for the nine-day festival is always at the end of July. The exact date is based on the anniversary of the death of St. Liborius (July 23). The Libori festival and the accompanying funfair always begin on the Saturday before.
The name Libori goes back to Saint Liborius, an early Christian martyr and bishop of Le Mans. The Libori celebrations have their origins in the 8th century, when the bones of Saint Liborius were transferred to Paderborn. Since then, they have been an important part of the city's history and an occasion for the annual summer Libori festival.
The atmosphere of the summer Libori is based on a traditional combination of church celebrations and secular festivities. During the festival, there are over 150 fairground attractions on the "Liboriberg" in the city center, and the Square of Small Arts combines street and cabaret art during the day with concerts and DJ sets in the evening. It's a kind of "fifth season" for Paderborn that you shouldn't miss!
