The Sommerbend originated from the Bendfest, which was originally a church festival. It was celebrated in honor of Saint Pontianus and took place on the Bendplatz. Over time, the Bendfest developed into a larger public festival. Rides, stalls and entertainment were added. The name changed from "Bendfest" to "Sommerbend".
