The Leipzig Water Festival is an annual event that celebrates Leipzig's location on the water. The Leipzig Water Festival was first held in 2001 to draw attention to the wasteland along the Karl Heine Canal and the potential of the connection with Lindenau Harbour and the Karl Heine Canal. At that time, the cycle path along the Karl Heine Canal was still relatively unused, the houses unrenovated and empty.
The event stretches from the Plagwitz district park to Lindenau harbor.
Numerous hands-on activities await visitors:
Raft building competition: teams build and sail large rafts on the Karl Heine Canal.
Kayak and canoe competition: fun trip to Lindenau harbor.
Dragon boat cup: Teams compete against each other in dragon boats.
Canal bike tour: Guided tour along the Leipzig-Saale Canal.
Fishing tournament: Teams compete against each other in rowing boats.
Taster courses for children and young people on water topics.
Films on the history of the Leipzig waterway network are being sought.
Fun, information and enjoyment: The Water Festival offers entertainment, information and culinary delights.
Leipzig's waterways and banks serve as a stage for the event.
