Dashahara is a Hindu festival celebrated on the tenth day of the moonlit half of the Hindu month of Ashvayuja, usually in early/mid-October according to the modern calendar. It is the last day and climax of a ten-day festival, which is called differently in each region of India.
Navaratri (the nine nights) stands for the victory of good over evil. Just as Lord Rama defeated the demon king Ravana with the help of the divine mother, man can also win the inner battle against his negative qualities. Victory is achieved on the tenth day (Dussehra).
The underlying legends, customs and traditions also differ considerably. Dashahara is not only one of the highest religious holidays of the Hindus, but also has important social significance everywhere.
