The nationwide Intercultural Week (IKW) is an initiative of the German Bishops' Conference, the Protestant Church in Germany and the Greek Orthodox Metropolis. It has been held at the end of September every year since 1975. Around 5,000 events are held in more than 600 cities and communities. The nationwide Day of the Refugee is part of the IKW.
A forerunner of the Intercultural Week was the "Day of the Foreign Citizen", which was held in many places from 1975. In 1983, it became the "Week of the Foreign Citizen".
