Ganesh Chaturathi, the festival of the Indian elephant deity, is one of the most important Hindu festivals in India. Hindus of all faiths celebrate the birth of Ganesha, the son of Lord Shiva and his wife Parvati. On his birthday, people honor the elephant-headed deity with prayers.
In Hinduism, Ganesha is considered the god of wisdom, wealth and good fortune. The locals believe that Ganesha removes obstacles on the path to success with his trunk. For this reason, devotees bring Ganesha food, sweets and milk. The festival lasts 10 days. According to legend, on the day of Ganesha's appearance - the 4th day of the waxing moon in the month of Bhadrapada (August-September) - one should not look at the moon in the evening, as this is considered an unfavorable sign.
According to legend, he was created in the absence of his father and then beheaded by him because he thought he was a stranger. This broke Parvati's heart. To comfort her, Shiva sent his men to bring him the head of the first sleeping creature they encountered. They brought him the head of a young elephant, which Shiva placed on his son's body and brought him back to life.
