The annual central day of remembrance of the deportation of Russian Germans took place on August 28. On this day, the Federal Government Commissioner for Ethnic German Resettlers and National Minorities commemorates the victims of Stalin's decree.
On 28 August 1941, the highest legislative body of the USSR, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet, legitimized a secret decision by the Soviet party leadership headed by Stalin. According to this decision, the Autonomous Republic of the Volga Germans was to be liquidated and its inhabitants of German origin deported to Siberia and Central Asia, regardless of age, merit or party affiliation. This was followed by further forced deportations of Germans from rural and urban areas in the European part of the USSR. The territory of the Volga German Republic and other historical settlement areas were incorporated into the neighboring Russian and Ukrainian regions.
