The name of this festival translates to the birth celebration of the 10th divine light or divine knowledge. It commemorates the birth of Guru Gobind Singh.
Guru Gobind Singh Ji (January 5, 1667 - October 21, 1708 Julian calendar), born as "Gobind Rai" in Patna Sahib, Bihar, India, was the tenth and last of the Gurus of the human form of Sikhism. He became a guru on November 24, 1675 at the age of nine after his father, the ninth guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, was martyred.
