Looking back to the first Hamburg Marathon, it took place five years before the fall of the Berlin Wall. The first edition took place in 1986 with around 8,000 participants. The German Chancellor was still Helmut Kohl and the German soccer champions were VfB Stuttgart - ahead of Hamburger SV. But the Hamburg Marathon is by no means the oldest race of its kind. The marathon oldie is the "Rund um den Baldeneysee" race in Essen. This route has been run without interruption since 1963.
The Hamburg Marathon is an annual marathon race over the classic distance of 42.195 km (26.219 miles) in Hamburg, Germany. The marathon is categorized by World Athletics as a Gold Label Road Race.
Numerous roads will be closed along the course. Bus services will also be restricted.
