On February 12 is commemorated the Day of the Ecuadorian East (Día del Oriente Ecuatoriano), also known as the Day of the Amazon. Its history dates back to 1542 when Francisco de Orellana arrived at the Amazon River in Ecuador, in search of El Dorado, the great lost treasure.
Since then, the Amazon River has been used for many purposes and continues to be an important cultural heritage and resource for humanity, as well as being recognized as "the largest river in the world". The Amazon region also stands out for its important diversity of fauna and flora, and is also considered "the lungs of the world".
The Amazon River contains one-fifth of the planet's freshwater. When the Andean ice melts every year, the river overflows and increases its levels between 9 and 13 meters. The Amazon rainforest and river are home to more than 40,000 species of flora, 2,000 species of fish, around 400 species of mammals and amphibians, a similar number of reptiles and 2.5 million insects.
