Who has never been to the cinema to see a movie? It is rare who hasn't. And it is normal, since the so-called seventh art has more than 120 years of history. Today, January 28 is the National Day of Venezuelan Cinema.
On July 11, 1896, the first cinema was held in Maracaibo. The apparatus used was the Edison Vitascope, which had been acquired by Luis Manuel Méndez in New York City. Méndez hired Manuel Trujillo Durán to operate the apparatus. The first films made in Venezuela were Célebre especialista sacando muelas en el Gran Hotel Europa, and Muchachos bañándose en laguna de Maracaibo, both premiered on January 28, 1897 at the Baralt Theater in Maracaibo, and whose production has been attributed to Manuel Trujillo Durán. In this same year, other pioneers of cinema such as Ricardo Rouffet and Carlos Ruiz Chapellín made some short films in the city of Caracas.
