Today, December 16, marks the anniversary of the "Day of Loyalty", the date on which Omar Torrijos regained power, after opponents of the general tried to overthrow him while he was traveling in Mexico, participating in an equestrian event.
Taking advantage of his absence, members of the Provisional Government Junta, integrated by Colonels José María Pinilla, Bolívar Urrutia and Amado Sanjur, tried to prevent his return to Panama, however Torrijos was alerted by his comrades in arms, who helped him to enter the country.
Among the officers who supported him were Major Manuel Antonio Noriega, who was head of the military zone of Chiriqui, Lorenzo Porcell, Ricardo Garibaldo and Lieutenant Edilberto Del Cid.
That early morning, on December 16, 1969, General Torrijos arrived at the Enrique Malek Airport, in David Chiriqui, and in a caravan of military and civilians he moved to the Presidency of the Republic where he took control of power.
