National Voluntary Blood Donor Day (Día Nacional del Donante Voluntario de Sangre) has been celebrated in Uruguay every November 12, since 1992; 2022 year, the date coincided with the fiftieth anniversary of the first blood bank of the Faculty of Medicine (University of the Republic) and the Ministry of Public Health. The date was instituted by decree of the Executive Power on September 8, 1992, and its purpose is to "encourage awareness among the country's inhabitants in order to obtain a greater number of donors".
