A few years ago, when the country's Senate officially proclaimed "National Women's Soccer Players Day" in April 2019, it was restoring a long-forgotten history that new generations have sought to recover.
The story of why the August 21 date was chosen has to do with the feat accomplished by Argentina's women's soccer team at the 1971 World Cup in Mexico. More than fifty years earlier, Albiceleste had beaten England 4-1 at the Azteca Stadium, which meant the birth of the "Las Pioneras," as that team was called.
