In commemoration of the founding of the first school of veterinary medicine, it was proposed the creation of the celebration of the Day of the Veterinary Doctor-Zootechnician every August 17, date in which the work and dedication of veterinarians is recognized.
In 1853, the first school of veterinary medicine in the American continent was founded in Mexico. It was added to the National College of Agriculture that already existed in the old San Gregorio College.
By 1857, after being closed due to the instability of its environment, this teaching changed to the National School of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, which lasted until 1914.
Between 1916 and 1918 the studies were resumed, although separated, at the National School of Agriculture (currently the University of Chapingo).
Since 1939 it has been known as the National School of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics, which also alludes to the breeding and improvement of economically valuable species, with which the associated disciplines and their teaching receive a notable boost.
The School moved from San Jacinto, on the Mexico-Tacuba road, to the new facilities of Ciudad Universitaria (In 1969 the University Council granted it the category of Faculty).
