The city of Tarija was founded on July 4, 1574 by the Spaniard Luis de Fuentes y Vargas, with the name of Villa de San Bernardo de la Frontera de Tarixa, following orders of Viceroy Francisco Alvarez de Toledo. It was also known as San Bernardo de La Frontera.
Fuentes accompanied by 45 Spaniards, when arriving to the valley, they found an old population raised by the conquerors who worked in the area previously; this population is known today as San Lorenzo or "Tarija la Vieja" (Old Tarija). They passed further on, and on the banks of the river, which they called "Guadalquivir" in memory of its similar one in Seville, where he was from, they founded the new city. Luis de Fuentes was named Captain and Chief Justice.
Tarija - BoliviaThe first settlers of the valley of Tarija were the churumatas and tomatas tribes. The first ones, resisting the Inca conquest, were forcibly dispersed throughout the Andes, becoming mitimaes populations.
