On July 4, 2016, then President Juan Manuel Santos signed the decree that established the annual celebration of the National Religious Freedom Day (Día Nacional de la Libertad Religiosa), in a meeting with more than 100 Christian, Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim leaders, from international social organizations such as Open Doors and the World Council of Churches.
Freedom of worship or religious freedom is a fundamental right that refers to the option of every human being to freely choose his or her religion, to choose none (irreligion), or not to believe in or validate the existence of a God (atheism and agnosticism) and to exercise this belief publicly, without being a victim of oppression, discrimination or forced to change it.
