May 7 marks the anniversary of the election and proclamation of San Hipolito Martir as patron saint of Cosentaina, an ephemeris remembered again in the municipality by various actions organized by Junta de Festes.
Hippolytus of Rome or Bishop Hippolytus was a writer of the early Christian Church. He was apparently elected as the first antipope in 217, but died reconciled to the Church in 235 as a martyr, for which he is now honored as a saint. The mystery surrounding the person and writings of Hippolytus, one of the most prolific ecclesiastical writers of the early centuries, was first partially unraveled in the mid-nineteenth century by the discovery of his Philosophumena. Assuming this work to be the work of Hippolytus, the information given in it regarding the author and his time can be combined with other known dates to give a reasonable outline of his life.
