Bamboo (Bambusoidaea) is a giant grass and the fastest growing plant on this planet (the only thing that grows quicker is giant sea kelp in the ocean). The Bamboos consists of 1439 different species in 116 genera. Bamboo is a crucial element in the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. A grove of bamboo produces 35% more oxygen than a similar stand of trees. One must always remember the Japanese proverb: 'The bamboo that bends is stronger than the oak that resists."
World Bamboo Day is observed on September 18 every year with the aim to raise awareness to conserve and promote the bamboo industry. World Bamboo Organization stresses on the importance of planting bamboo plants.
The Study estimates that at present, bamboo markets have a combined annual value of approximately USD $7 billion. Traditional products account for almost 95% of this value. Newer industries offer growth potential and are expected to rival traditional bamboo-related markets over the medium-term.
