August 6 was instituted in 1959 as the "Day of Agricultural Education", in commemoration of the beginning of classes at the Agronomic-Veterinary Institute of the province of Buenos Aires, in 1883. This date marked the beginning of higher agricultural studies.
The Institute occupied the premises of the former Santa Catalina ranch, owned by the Robertson brothers -located in the present Lomas de Zamora district- and its objective was "to apply the discoveries of science to the different branches of animal and vegetable production, to train experts and observers capable of improving the procedures of soil exploitation".
