On June 30, Chile commemorates the National Firefighters Day, a date that was established in 1962 by Law 14.866 to remember the foundation of the first volunteer corps, which occurred in Valparaiso in 1851 after a mega fire that devastated the port city.
The service provided by the Fire Department is benevolent, charitable and altruistic, great virtues that together with a great sense of duty and obedience, forge the soul of a volunteer Firefighter.
In 1962, the President of the Republic, Mr. Jorge Alessandri Rodríguez, established June 30 as National Firefighter's Day.
He did so in reference to the creation of the Valparaiso Fire Department, the first Fire Department of the Republic founded precisely on June 30, 1851. That day and since that date, is used as recognition to the work done by volunteer firefighters throughout Chile, a work increasingly important, efficient and key to solve many of the emergencies that occur in the country.
