Grandparents' Day is celebrated in Colombia on the fourth Sunday of August and is commemorated in conjunction with the Day of the Elderly and Pensioners. Grandparents are one of the most important figures in the family.
In Colombia the celebration was established in August 1990 under decree 1740 of August 2 of that year and signed by the then Minister of Government Horacio Serpa. The decree stated that Grandparents' Day would be celebrated every year on the fourth Sunday of August.
It was in 1996 that Decree 271 ordered that this same date be commemorated as the National Day of the Elderly and Pensioners. Three years later, in 1999, this was regulated by Decree 2113 to also include retired people as a way of thanking them for their contribution to the country.
