A date to remember the importance of the people who are usually the most loved and respected within a family. Grandparents play an important role in our lives, due to the experience and wisdom they accumulate over the years.
The choice of July 26 to celebrate Grandparents' Day has a biblical origin. The date was instituted by Pope Paul VI, in the 20th century, to honor the parents of Mary, mother of Jesus, named Anne and Joachim.
These two historical characters were canonized in the 16th century by Pope Gregory VIII for being the grandparents of Jesus Christ. According to Christian tradition, as a result of a miraculous act, the couple conceived Mary, even though, according to some, they were barren.
Saint Anne and Saint Joachim have received many commemorations on various dates, but Pope Paul VI determined July 26 to be the definitive date.
