The United Nations has chosen January 6 to draw people's attention to the situation of orphans (that's our "word of the day") of war. The International Convention on the Rights of the Child states that their rights must be respected even in times of war.
Children are not responsible ... and should not become victims of their parents' stupidity. Children have the right to be protected in all circumstances and to live in a peaceful environment, even if adults have not been able to resolve their conflicts in an intelligent way.
The material situation of war orphans in conflict-affected areas remains extremely problematic and the appeal to states to remedy this state of affairs is as necessary as ever...
There are currently a great number of war refugees in the world; more than half of them are children, and among them there are many orphans.
