One out of every three pets will become lost at some point in their lives. Every two seconds in US a family pet becomes lost. 10 million dogs and cats become lost or stolen each year in the U.S. Only 15-20% of dogs that go missing are returned to their homes.
One-third of all dogs and cats in the United States are reported missing in their lifetimes, more than 80% are never found, and between 9,450,000 and 9,632,000 pets that wind up in shelters in the US are killed.
On April 23, 2014, Lost Dogs of America created and launched the first National Lost Dog Awareness Day (NLDAD), a canine-focused day aimed to bring attention to all dogs that are lost each year, while also celebrating the thousands of lost dogs successfully reunited with their families.
Lost Dogs of America is an all-volunteer organization with the exclusive purpose of providing a free service to help reunite families with their lost dogs.
