They Can Eat 75 Pounds of Food Per Day. Their Closest Relatives Are Rhinos and Horses. Tapirs Are Often Called 'Living Fossils'. They are quite fast and can run up to 30 MPH (50 kph). They also are agile swimmers. Tapirs are rather large and can up to 8 feet (2.5 m) in length and weigh up to 1200 lbs (540 kg).
Their diet is made up of fruit, leaves and bark, especially new growth, all of which can be high up on trees. Tapirs don't jump, so with the prehensile upper lip, they can grasp things they wouldn't otherwise be able to reach.
World Tapir Day has been celebrated annually on April 27 since 2007. All tapir species face the threat of extinction. Saving tapirs helps to save rainforests and other habitats, thereby helping to save the planet and mitigate the effect of climate change.
