Montgomery is the capital and the birthplace of the Confederate States of America. The Confederate flag was designed and first flown in Alabama in 1861.
Alabama Has a Few Nicknames. Have you heard of the “Yellowhammer State”? Well, that’s Alabama! This nickname came about from the state bird. The Northern Flicker is a woodpecker that has yellow feathers under its tail feathers, hence the name, yellowhammer. Yellowhammer was also a name given to Huntsville, Alabama soldiers as their uniforms were adorned with yellow cloth.
