22 September - Baltic Unity Day in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia
22 September is the day the Baltic tribes united to defeat the Order of the Sword in the Battle of the Sun. Lithuanians and Latvians proclaimed this day as Baltic Unity Day.
In 2000, the parliaments of Lithuania and Latvia proclaimed 22 September, the day of the Battle of the Sun, as Baltic Unity Day. The joint commemoration of this historic date is a tradition for the Speakers of the Lithuanian Seimas and the Latvian Saeima, as well as for members of the inter-parliamentary liaison groups, to meet and discuss further parliamentary cooperation.
On the proposal of the Lithuanian-Latvian Unity Society, it was agreed to light the Flame of Unity on 22 September between 20.00-21.00 (Lithuanian time). Participants are invited to prepare the fireplace properly, light the fire, hoist flags, sing national songs, and recall the Baltic tribes, history, languages and customs. If there are other hills nearby on which to gather, it is suggested to raise burning sticks, set off fireworks or set off fire lanterns to see each other's signs.
