Stephen Foster Memorial Day
Stephen Foster Memorial Day is held on January 13. United States. This event in the second decade of the month January is annual.
Foster taught himself to play the clarinet, guitar, flute, and piano. He did not have formal instruction in composition but he was helped by Henry Kleber (1816–1897), a German-born music dealer in Pittsburgh.
He absorbed musical influences from the popular, sentimental songs sung by his sisters; from Black church services he attended with the family's servant Olivia Pise; from popular minstrel show songs; and from songs sung by Black labourers at the Pittsburgh warehouse where he worked for a time.
It's been estimated that during Foster's lifetime he earned just over fifteen thousand dollars in royalties on sheet music from his entire catalog of songs, and no income at all from performance royalties. His wife and daughter earned a total of $4,199 after his death.
