National Ichthyology Day in Argentina
National Ichthyology Day in Argentina is held on September 10. This event in the first decade of the month September is annual.
Ichthyology is a branch of zoology dedicated to the study of fish, where through this science they are classified into three large groups: osteichthyans (bony fish), chondrichthyans (cartilaginous fish such as rays and sharks) and agnathans (jawless fish).
In commemoration of the birth of the outstanding scientist Raúl Adolfo Ringuelet, the National Ichthyology Day is commemorated every September 10.
Ringuelet was born in the city of La Plata (Buenos Aires) in 1914, where he completed his secondary studies at the Colegio Nacional La Plata, achieving through his knowledge, in 1939, the title of Doctor in Natural Sciences at the Instituto Superior del Museo, dependent on the Universidad Nacional de La Plata.
Three years before finishing his studies he published in "Notas del Museo de La Plata" his first work under the title "Sobre una nueva especie del género Semiscolex Kinberg" (On a new species of the genus Semiscolex Kinberg).
His extensive research constitutes more than 100 scientific articles on the ecology, limnology, biogeography and conservation of the continental waters of South America, becoming a reference in Natural Sciences in Argentina.
