Port Wine Day
Port Wine Day is held on September 10. This event in the first decade of the month September is annual.
Wine has been made in Portugal and the Douro Valley for thousands of years. In the 17th century, when the import of French wine to Britain was restricted, winemaking in Portugal flourished and the town of Porto became an important hub for wine merchants.
The Douro Wine Region is the oldest delimited and regulated wine region in the world. It extends from Vila de Barqueiros, in the district of Vila Real, to Barca D’Alva, in the district of Guarda, covering an area of about 250 thousand acres, which includes the Alto Douro Wine Region, classified as World Heritage by UNESCO since 2001.
Port Wine Day takes place on September 10, when the Demarcated Douro Region was created by the Marquês de Pombal in 1756. This initiative of the Institute of Douro and Port Wines (IVDP) , together with Port Wine producers, was created in 2014 with the intention of celebrating the anniversary of the Douro Region and promoting Port Wine.
