St. Leopold Day
St. Leopold Day is held on November 15. Patron saint of Austria and Vienna. This event in the second decade of the month November is annual.
November 15 is a bank holiday in Lower Austria - there they celebrate St. Leopold, their patron saint.
Leopold III was the sixth margrave from the Babenberg family. He was initially neutral in the Investiture Controversy, but in 1105 sided with the later Emperor Henry V, who rebelled against his own father, Henry IV. As a result, he married his sister Agnes, the daughter of Emperor Henry IV, widow of Duke Frederick I of Swabia and mother of the later King Conrad III (1106).
This connection with the Salian and, at the same time, the Hohenstaufen dynasty considerably enhanced the margrave's prestige; from then on, the Babenbergs belonged to the first families of the empire. In 1122 Leopold was instrumental in ending the conflict between the emperor and the pope (Worms Concordat). His influence and prestige had grown so much that he was offered the crown of the empire after the death of his brother-in-law Henry V, but he refused (1125).
