Transfer Day recognizes the historic significance of the territory’s transfer of ownership from Denmark to the United States of America on March 31, 1917. The flag of the US Virgin Islands was adopted in 1921.
The official music of the Virgin Islands is called quelbe. It is a distinctive form of music created by scratch bands (or fungi bands as they’re more often known as). These bands use improvised musical instruments such as washboards and gourds to create their own originial sound and beat.
As of July 2005, the population of the Virgin Islands was only 108, 708 people.
Interesting facts about U.S. Virgin Islands: The oldest rocks on the island of St. John emerged roughly 108 million years ago. The highest point on the Virgin Islands is only 474 meters high. It is called Crown Mountain.
Did you know that the Virgin Islands are one of the only regions in North America that you can find the "century plant"? This rare plant species can be found of several of the Islands’ beaches, and is called the century plant because it takes 15-20 years to bloom, and then it dies shortly afterwards.
The U.S. Virgin Islands offers a variety of fun-filled activities for all travelers, many of whom keep coming back year after year.
The US Virgin Islands is the only US Territory to be bordered by both the Atlantic and Caribbean Sea. And with all that water, there’s a plethora of water activities to participate in, including diving, sailing, kayaking, sport fishing, snorkeling, windsurfing, parasailing and kite boarding.
