Rosa Parks Day in Ohio and Oregon

Calendars of different countries: US Holidays
Rosa Parks was born Rosa Louise McCauley on February 4th, 1913. Her husband Raymond Parks was a member of the NAACP(the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). She was the secretary of the Montgomery, Alabama NAACP and was trained in civil rights. The busses in 1950’s Montgomery were segregated by a law from 1900. On december 1st, 1955 this woman refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger and was arrested. Rosa Parks’ case was not the case that desegregated the busses. The busses in Montgomery were desegregated on december 20th, 1956. But her arrest sparked a 381-day boycott of the Montgomery bus system that ignited the civil rights movement, and she was chosen by Edgar Nixon and MLK, Jr. to be a symbol.
The first day of December is designated as "Rosa Parks Day," in honor of the woman who helped usher in the modern civil rights movement on that day in 1955 by refusing to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. (ORC 5.2231 Rosa Parks Day. Effective Date: 04-14-2006)
