30 September - Independence Day in Botswana or Botswana Day
Independence Day of Botswana is celebrated in late September. The celebrations are timed to the independence from Great Britain, which Botswana gained in 1966. Festive events, concerts and parades are held on this day throughout the country.
The national holiday of the Republic of Botswana, known as Botswana Day, is celebrated annually on September 30. It celebrates the independence and sovereignty of the country from the United Kingdom, which the state received in 1966.
In the 19th century, hostilities broke out between several tribes that claimed ownership of the territories of present-day Botswana. Tensions increased when some settlers arrived from the Transvaal. Eventually a group of leaders appealed to the British government for protection. On 31 March 1885, the British Protectorate of South Africa, called Bechuanaland, was officially established.
In 1961, Sir Seretse Khama, whose parents were in exile in Britain because of their interracial marriage, founded the Botswana Democratic Party, which began to fight for independence from the British protectorate. Three years later, they managed to achieve democratic self-government.
The first general elections in the country were held in 1965 after the adoption of the Constitution. On September 30, 1996, Botswana officially became an independent republic in the British Commonwealth with the first president Sir Seretse Khama.
He managed to achieve the transformation of Botswana, one of the poorest countries in Africa at that time, into one of the most intensively developing countries on the African continent. Seretse successfully fought corruption and created a stable democratic state, free from the threat of military coups that have plagued some African states from time to time. A year after independence, a huge diamond mine was discovered in Orapa. At the moment, Botswana is one of the most prosperous countries in Africa. The country is the world's largest producer of the most valuable diamonds and the second largest in terms of production. It owns about 17.7% of the world's total diamond production.
Botswana Independence Day has become a national holiday of the country. It is widely celebrated across the country with official speeches, ceremonies, parades, parties, concerts and other festive events. The main celebrations take place in the capital - Gaborone.
