13 September - Engineer's Day in Mauritius
Engineers, as practitioners of engineering, are professionals who invent, design, analyze, build and test machines, complex systems, structures, gadgets and materials to fulfill functional objectives and requirements while considering the limitations imposed by practicality, regulation, safety and cost. The engineering profession has a tremendous role to play in the development process of any country. Mauritius is no exception.
On the occasion of Engineers Day 13 September 2012, the IEM House was inaugurated by Hon. A.K. Bachoo, G.O.S.K Vice Prime Minister & Minister of Public Infrastructure, NDU & LTU.
Looking back at the known history of Mauritius from the 15th century, when the Arabs first visited Mauritius, followed by the Malays, then the Dutch and subsequently the French and the British, all these people have contributed, through the engineers, in providing Mauritius with the foundations of civilizations and infrastructures needed for the development of our society. Engineers have had a major role in developing the island by providing for protection of its shores, by providing the basic needs for protection of men and property through the building of fortresses to guard against attacks and aliens, by building barracks for soldiers, buildings for themselves and their workers, warehouses for storage of food and goods, roads to be able to move from A to B, ports for safe movement and anchoring of their ships etc... This engineering process to provide for the societal needs has been an ongoing strife.
